Zweena bint Asya
World Fusion Dance Studio Presents
Zweena bint Asya (Sara Jo Slate) began belly dancing in
1990 and has been teaching since 1997. Zweena has
studied with instructors in both the US and Morocco and
has been inspired most by two teachers: Lucianne Estes
(Asya) of Ashland, Oregon and Leila Gamal, of South
Bend, Indiana. Recognized for her unique lyrical style,
creative approach to teaching, and dynamic workshop
instruction, Zweena performs and teaches "old style" belly
dance with a modern twist. Zweena is a former member of
Troupe Shalimar (Oregon) and is founder of the celebrated
Troupe Taleeba (Indiana). Zweena holds a BA from
Wellesley College and a masters in education from Harvard
University. She is a member of the American Guild of Musical
Artists and is a founding member of the High Desert
Bellydance Guild. Currently raising her family on the
banks of the Deschutes River in Sunriver, Oregon, Zweena
teaches at the Sunriver Dance Academy.
In 2003, Zweena choreographed the Lyric Opera of Chicago's
production of Thais and performed in the production
as a principal soloist. Zweena also choreograph the
New York Metropolitan Opera's production of Thais,
which was broadcast at theaters worldwide as a part of the
Met Live in HD series.

Slow Power 10 a.m.-Noon 2 hours :Bored by dancing chifti, toxim, or veil? With emotional expression,
connection to the music/rhythms, effective composition, and attention to technical details, even simple,
slow dances can become even more mind blowing than our drum solos. Participants will experience a
series of exercises designed to add flow, intensity, and polish to slow movements. Workshop includes an
“old style” isolation warm-up series. Please bring veils (may or may not be used depending on how
workshop progresses), your creativity, and a willingness to give and receive positive feedback.
Dancing Together 1-3 p.m.2 hours : This is one of the most unusual dance workshops you’ll ever
attend! Instead of honing technique or teaching choreography, this workshop builds community among
belly dancers. Communities that can support each other in positive ways are more effective promoting
belly dance as a legitimate art form. Through a series of exercises that use Middle Eastern movements to
help dancers build effective relationships and positive group dynamics, participants will get to know each
other better, learn guidelines for giving and receiving feedback, and might even create a rough version of
a group choreography. Exercises learned can be also be applied to troupes and classes. Wear whatever
you like to wear when you dance and leave your politics at the door.
